I just got an iPad. My MacBook Pro runs OS 10.6.8. Apparently I
need to upgrade to 10.7 for it to access the iCloud.

But I'm having a *TERRIBLE* time trying to get 10.7. Earlier today I
spent at least an hour at the App Store and Apple.com trying to
figure out how to get it. At the App Store I clicked on the $29.99
but nothing happened.

Just now I clicked on the $29.99 and got "Buy App" so I went through
with that (credit card etc.) and it seemed to be placing the order
but nothing happened -- no download etc.

Checked apple.com order status and it has the order for the ipad but
not for 10.7. Called Apple and their robot sent me to
http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/
but I can't find a way to get help from there either.

Please, can someone tell me what to do?

I wound up getting the basic 13" MBP and really like it so far, at least as far as I've gotten with it. I've got to make the transition from my Windows computer and that's going to take some doing. There are a few things I want that I don't know if they're available.

Why does nobody make a Streets and Trips type package for the Mac? I want to be able to input two addresses and get directions between the two plus total distance. I really want ST but MS apparently is too stupid to realize they have another market in Macs. I'll probably go with Parallels at some point for that plus a few other things that are PC only.

Is there a really good and really concise how to Mac in quick simple steps?

That's only the svelte new 15-inch Retina Display MBP. The RAM in there is soldered onto the motherboard, so you need to choose 8 or 16 GB up front. The SSD is still on a daughter card.

The 2012 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro have a similar design as last year's models. The discreet hard drive inside pretty much requires it.

The next generation MacBook Pro with the Retina display is not user upgradeable, but the standard MacBook Pros available in 13 and 15 inch configurations still are.

The lack of user upgradeable parts in the next gen model is unfortunate because it paints the way of the future. I would rather have the option to install my own upgrades and sacrifice a few millimeters in the thickness of a 15 inch notebook for which I do not have the expectations of being ultraportable anyway. If I needed ultraportable I would have gone for the 11 or 13 inch Airs. The 15 inch is a desktop replacement that I can take home or to the conference table and the infrequent trip. Weight and thickness do not matter that much sitting on the desk or countertop.

Thanks for the input. I should have added that my storage needs are easily covered by the smallest drive options of both computers. I currently have 75gb used on my HP laptop and I suspect a fair amount of that is stuff I just keep moving from one computer to the next.
