[MacBook] Downloading IOS update files then finding them

2011 11 20

The files for updating our iOS devices (2 iPad 2s, 2 iPhones, one iPad 1) are big and our DSL is no champ on speed (oh thank you VZ & Comcast for shorting the rural areas of the USA). For the latest one (5.0.1) we availed ourselves of the download first then install later option. Sounds easy, and doesn't thereby tie up your iOS device and your MBP. Good so far.

Then I decided to install the update for our iPad 1, to make sure all was well. Hooked it up for synch, and lo and behold, no option appeared to avoid ANOTHER download before doing the install of the update. What????

I hit the web and found instructions for a iOS "manual update", seemed easy. But when I browsed to find the file the instructions named, one apparently named or suffixed "IPSW", no could find.

I did a spotlight search separately, no luck.

Can anyone help me on this? The manual update instruction set says it takes about 10 minutes. Re-downloading will take a collective many hours!!

Thanks as always,

Jim Hardwick
