A New Chinese Threat Against U.S. Aircraft Carriers?

Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-22M3. Wikipedia

China Buys Tu-22 Production Line From Russia. A Major Threat To The U.S. Aircraft Carriers In The Region -- The Aviationist

For the third time in 7 years (first one being in 2005, second earlier in 2012) several websites in China (link in Chinese) are reporting that China and Russia have agreed for Beijing to buy the production line for the Tupolev Tu-22M3 bomber at a cost of 1.5 billion USD.

Once in service with the Chinese Naval Air Forces the Tu-22M3 will be known as the “H-10″.

The deal struck with Russia comes with 36 aircraft (and engines): an initial batch of 12 followed by a second batch of 24 aircraft are thought to be on order.

The Tu-22 will be employed in the maritime attack role and will be used to attack targets from low level (to avoid radar detection).

My Comment: Wikipedia has more information on the Tupolev Tu-22M3. So .... for 1.5 billion USD the Chinese are buying the production line of an old bomber .... on the surface I am not impressed .... but the Chinese usually have a very good reason on doing such purchases .... and your guess is as good as mine on this one. On a side note .... if the Chinese start to mass manufacture these planes (and others) .... expect the arms race in Asia to heat up.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Suffers More Complications After Cancer Surgery

Hugo Chávez Suffers From 'New Complications' After Surgery -- The Guardian

Vice president Nicolas Maduro tells Venezuelan people the president's health is delicate following cancer operation.

Hugo Chávez has suffered "new complications" following his cancer surgery in Cuba, his vice president said, describing the Venezuelan leader's condition as delicate.

Vice president Nicolas Maduro delivered a solemn televised address from Havana, saying he had spoken with Chávez and that the president sent greetings to his homeland. Maduro did not give details about the complications, which he said came amid a respiratory infection.

"Several minutes ago we were with president Chávez. We greeted each other and he himself referred to these complications," Maduro said, reading from a prepared statement. Maduro was seated alongside Chávez's eldest daughter, Rosa, and son-in-law Jorge Arreaza, as well as attorney-general Cilia Flores.

Hillary Clinton Hospitalized After Doctors Discover Blood Clot

Hillary Clinton Hospitalized After Doctors Discover Blood Clot -- NBC

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was admitted to a New York City hospital on Sunday after doctors discovered that a blood clot had formed, the State Department said in a statement.

Philippe Reines, a deputy assistant secretary, said in the statement that the clot stems from a concussion Clinton sustained several weeks ago.

Reines said that Clinton, 65, is being treated with anti-coagulants at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She will be monitored there for the next 48 hours, he said.

“Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," he said. "They will determine if any further action is required.”

Russian Warship Heads To Syria In Preparation For A Possible Evacuation -- Times of Israel

Moscow officials have acknowledged that citizens will be pulled out of the country should Assad’s regime fall.

The Kremlin is sending another warship to the Syrian port of Tartus, where Russia has a naval base, Russian news agencies reported.

The reports Sunday by the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agency cited an unidentified official in the military general staff as saying the Novocherkassk, a large landing ship, has set sail from the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk. She was “accompanied by a combat ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” according to a Russian news source.

The Novocherkassk was the third vessel of its kind dispatched since Friday from Russia to Tartus, AFP reported, and was expected to arrive in the area in early January.

The reports gave no information on the ship’s intent. But Russian diplomats have said that Moscow is preparing a plan to evacuate thousands of Russians from Syria if necessary. The Defense Ministry announced two weeks ago that several ships were being dispatched to the Mediterranean.

What Impact Will The Fiscal Cliff Have On The Pentagon

How Badly Will Budget Cuts Hurt Troops, DOD Civilians? -- Stars and Stripes

WASHINGTON — In the final presidential debate, President Barack Obama declared to the American people with unflinching certainty that sequestration “will not happen.”

Two months later, the Jan. 1 deadline is looming, with no debt reduction deal in sight.

Now what?

How quickly and deeply will these automatic defense budget cuts totaling about $500 billion over the next decade hit troops, Defense Department civilians and contractors? And how much will they hurt?

Many experts agree: “The sky is not going to suddenly fall on Jan. 2,” said Todd Harrison, a defense budget expert at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a Washington think tank. “In fact, we are likely to see hardly any impacts in that first week.”

President Obama Comments On Benghazi

Obama Cites 'Sloppiness' On Benghazi -- USA Today

President Obama says problems behind the Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, resulted from mistakes, not wrongdoing.

"There was just some sloppiness — not intentional — in terms of how we secure embassies in areas where you essentially don't have governments that have a lot of capacity to protect those embassies," Obama said on NBC's Meet The Press.

Obama also said that investigators "have some very good leads" on who carried out the attack that killed U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Afghan police remain poorly prepared to tackle the mighty challenges they will face as Western forces withdraw.

The Afghan national sport is called buzkashi. It's a game in which horsemen battle over a goat carcass. There are no established teams.

During a match, the competitors forge brief, continuously shifting alliances. They only work together until they have gained a short-term advantage. The game can last for hours, even days. The winner is the rider who manages to carry the carcass to the goal. Buzkashi is a mirror of Afghan society.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama offered strong support for former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as the potential next U.S. defense secretary but said in remarks aired on Sunday that he had not yet decided on a nominee for the Pentagon post.

Hagel is considered a leading candidate to replace outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, but the former Nebraska lawmaker has come under criticism for his record on Israel and for a comment that being gay was an inhibiting factor for being an ambassador.

"I've served with Chuck Hagel. I know him. He is a patriot. He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate, somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam," Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" in an interview taped on Saturday and broadcast on Sunday.

You're right! It's gone.

And I cannot locate it in my list of 'bought items' either. Discontinued?

To check what has happened I opened the App and went to the creators website.

It shows SnowTape2... For Mac only. No mention of any iOS version.

So I googled the product:

http://vemedio.com/products/snowtape_phone

But that link didn't bring me to the App store either. :-(

I'm quite satisfied with the App. It not only plays internet radio.... If you wish,

it also records these broadcasts, cuts them into seperate songs, adds cover art...

Perhaps has there been a change in Digital Rights Management and is this

App no longer allowed. It would explain a lot.

I'm sorry my advice didn't work out like I hoped it would be.

"Some cars arrived this morning and carried away dead bodies. We are not sure where."

MOSCOW: The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has said the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, will not quit before his term ends in 2014 and that it is ''impossible to change his position''.

The declaration came as Syrian armed forces recaptured a town in the west of the country after days of heavy fighting, Al Jazeera television reported. Government troops had taken control of Deir Balbah, near Homs, the station reported. An opposition coalition said the troops had executed some 220 residents, who were among at least 392 people killed across the country. The figures are unconfirmed.

He stated that the ruling Muslim Brotherhood was “stretching out its hand” to its neighbors with a view to developing its foreign policy and furthering interests.

Venezuela Is Now More Dangerous Than Afghanistan

Venezuela Murder Rate Soars -- The Telegraph

Venezuela, the most violent country in South America, recorded a new high of 21,692 murders this year along with a surge in kidnappings, prison riots and random shootings.

The number of victims was up by 12 per cent from last year when there were 19,336 deaths, the Venezuelan Violence Observatory said in its annual report.

High profile killings included that of a three year-old child, Edgar Torres, who was fired on 10 times while he was asleep in bed, after a gunman had come in to kill a teenage relative.

In August more than 20 people were killed in a battle between two heavily armed groups inside the Yare I prison. More than 300 prisoners died in Venezuelan jails in the first half of the year.

The Mexican ambassador Carlos Pujalte and his wife were seized from their car in a wealthy area of Caracas and held for several hours before being released alive in a slum in January.

Humor Is A Battlefield Weapon

Humor Can Be The Best Battlefield Weapon A Marine Ever Had -- Garrett Anderson, Business Insider

Happy Marines could be found throughout the Battle of Fallujah.

They would usually start at it early in the morning when their dirty faces could get away with it, a smile and a laugh, usually at some other Marine’s expense, the energy was strong in the morning, and everyone could only be happy before an operation. After that the smiles appeared only in brief short bursts, behind the gunfire and fire, the smoke that choked the young men with their black lungs.

I met Paul Stewgots during his first day assigned to our Infantry unit; he had transferred over from security forces and the Marine Corps’ elite fleet anti-terrorism force (Fast Company). I was mopping the floor in the Alpha Company office.

Australian Army General's Secret Battle With PTSD Leads Him From War Zone To Psych Ward -- FOX News

SYDNEY – In the exploding hell of battle, a single hand poked through the earth.

John Cantwell could see the ridges and calluses of the skin, and the pile of desert sand that had swallowed the rest of the Iraqi soldier. The troops Cantwell was fighting alongside in the Gulf War had used bulldozing tanks to bury the man alive.

This hand — so jarringly human amid the cold mechanics of bombs and anonymous enemies — was about to wedge itself, the Australian man would write decades later, "like a splinter under the skin of my soul." It would lead, along with other battlefield horrors, to the splintering of his mind and to a locked psychiatric ward. Could Syria Become Like Somalia?

Without Negotiations, Syria Will Be The New Somalia, UN Envoy Says -- The Guardian

Even Russia, Bashar al-Assad's biggest ally, is coming round to idea of talks as Syrian rebels continue to gain ground.

A diplomatic solution to the conflict in Syria seemed as far away as ever on Saturday, as the UN-Arab League envoy to Damascus, Lakhdar Brahimi, said the country risked slithering into "hell".

Following talks in Moscow with Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, Brahimi said there was no alternative to negotiations. The country faced two stark choices, he said – a serious, Syrian-led political dialogue between the rebels and the regime, or what he darkly called "Somali-isation".

Brahimi – who held talks on Monday in Damascus with Syria's defiant president, Bashar al-Assad – said stopping the bloody civil war in 2013 was indispensable. But, he conceded, the obstacles to peace were enormous.

My Comment: The fact that Assad is even entertaining the idea of having talks tells me that he knows that his rule is slipping. Unfortunately for him .... the rebels know that the momentum is on their side, and that it will only be a matter of time before he is driven out of Damascus. As for Syria becoming the "new Somalia" .... I doubt it. Its tribal make up is not the same as that of Somalia .... but a sectarian conflict .... that's now becoming a given in present day war-torn Syria..

Taliban Kills 21 Kidnapped Pakistani Soldiers:Oofficials -- Times of India/AFP
