Are The Afghan Taliban Looking For A Peace Deal?

Taliban Hint At Softer Line In Talks With Afghan Leaders -- New York Times

KABUL, Afghanistan — After years of deriding Afghanistan’s government and army as corrupt tools of Western occupiers, the Taliban have begun publicly airing a softer vision for the country’s future, with senior insurgent leaders saying the militants are willing to govern alongside other Afghan factions and even to adopt the current American-financed army as their own.

That message was delivered over the past few days by Taliban envoys during private meetings with Afghan officials and opposition politicians near Paris, according to officials close to the talks, and the softer approach has been echoed in recent interviews with Taliban figures loyal to the group’s nominal leader, Mullah Muhammad Omar. Together, it is the furthest that the Taliban’s senior leadership has gone to express in some official way that the group would be willing to operate as a mainstream Afghan political faction rather than aiming to return as conquering rulers after the end of the NATO combat mission in 2014.

But with the Taliban there are always questions.

Nothing is sweeter than seeing a soldier or sailor reunited with their family after a long deployment overseas. Embracing each other for the first time can often be a very intimate moment for these families, and one that some service members plan well in advance, making sure to give their loved ones a giant and welcome surprise.

In many cases, it’s the first time the entire family has been together in months, perhaps even years. We’ve rounded up the top 7 surprise military homecomings caught on camera in 2012.

China Bans Military Banquets

China To Clamp Down On Military Banquets -- Wall Street Journal

BEIJING—China's top military brass said it will put a stop to boozy banquets for high-level officers, in the latest sign that intense public pressure is forcing Chinese officials to show they are trying to root out corruption.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said late Friday that the Central Military Commission issued new rules that banned luxury banquets and liquor at receptions, as well as red carpets, floral arrangements, formations of soldiers and other trappings of power. It also said commission officials would limit travel abroad, and that the rules forbade them from staying in civilian hotels or in military hotels "specially equipped with luxury accommodation" during inspection tours.

Inside China's Growing Military

Dark Sword Drone Nick Kaloterakis

Inside China's Secret Arsenal -- Popular Science

The Chinese government is rapidly building a bigger, more sophisticated military. Here’s what they have, what they want, and what it means for the U.S.

In a single generation, China has transformed itself from a largely agrarian country into a global manufacturing and trading powerhouse. China’s economy is 20 times bigger than it was two decades ago and is on track to surpass the United States’ as the world’s largest. But perhaps most startling has been the growth of China’s ambitious and increasingly powerful military.

Just 10 years ago, the budget for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was roughly $20 billion. Today, that number is more like $100 billion. (Some analysts think it’s closer to $160 billion.) The PLA’s budget is only a sixth of what the U.S. devotes to defense annually, but defense dollars go much further in China, and in the years ahead, Chinese military spending will grow at the same rate as its economy.

My Comment: The Chinese see themselves as Asia's regional superpower today (which one can debate that they are).... and a global superpower in 20-30 years. It is (of course) that 20-30 year plan that is getting everyone nervous. What's my take .... China has a very long way to go before they are a global super power .... and there is no guarantee that they will become one even then.

The civil war in Syria, targeted shootings in Somalia and continued violence in Pakistan made 2012 a particularly dangerous year for journalists, with at least 67 killed worldwide in direct relation to their work, according to an organization that defends press freedom.

The fatality numbers compiled through mid-December by the Committee to Protect Journalists represent a 42 percent increase over 2011. The committee says 2012 is on track to becoming one of the deadliest years for journalists since it began compiling records in 1992.

Egypt Votes On Divisive Draft Constitution -- Al Jazeera

Final round of voting is underway on the new Islamist-backed charter that critics claim is polarising the nation.

Polling stations opened in Egypt in the second and final round of a referendum on a new constitution that was drafted by an assembly dominated by Islamists and that the opposition says is polarising the nation.

After a first round vote last week, polls opened on Saturday in areas analysts expected would give another "yes" vote.

The vote is taking place in 17 of Egypt's 27 provinces with about 25 million eligible voters.

The vote comes a day after clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

A U.S. Navy concept for the Ohio-Replacement Program submarine. (Naval Sea Systems Command)

Submarine Design Effort Gets $2B Boost -- Defense News

The effort to design and develop the U.S. Navy’s next ballistic missile submarine got a major boost Friday with the announcement of a nearly $2 billion contract award to General Dynamics.

The contract was awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to GD’s Electric Boat division in Groton, Conn., the only shipbuilder deemed capable of designing the Ohio-Class Replacement Program (ORP) submarine.

NAVSEA, in a statement accompanying the contract announcement noted that “special incentives” are included in the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract to compensate for the lack of competition.

Time To Put Sanctions On Table In Iran Talks?

Former Generals And Diplomats Urge Obama To Put Sanctions On Table In Iran Talks -- Julian Borger, The Guardian

Letter to the White House says time for diplomacy is running out.

A group of 24 experts on nuclear weapons and Iran, including former generals, diplomats and officials, have sent a letter to President Obama urging him to press ahead with the next round of diplomacy with Iran over its nuclear programme and to improve the international offer on the table.

The group includes General Joseph Hoar, a former US Central Command chief, and Lt General Robert Gard, a former president of the National Defence University, as well as many former diplomats from the US and European with experience of the issue.

China Is Determined To Enforce Their Territorial Claims

China Shores up Territorial Claims -- Voice of America

China has long had territorial maritime disputes with its Asian neighbors, but over the past year tensions over its claims in the East and South China Sea have seen a dramatic uptick. Beijing is using everything from establishing a new city in the South China Sea to weather reports to take a more assertive stance.

As a rising maritime power, China is using a wide range of measures to shore up its territorial claims.

In July, Beijing established a new city and military garrison on the island of Sansha, extending its reach further into the South China Sea. Next month, police on Hainan island will begin to search and board foreign ships that enter its claimed territory.

My Comment: The Chinese are not going to bend .... and it appears that some Asian leaders and thinkers are beginning to understand that. What does not help the situation for these Asian leaders is that there is also a growing realization that the U.S. does not want to be directly involved in these border disputes.

Wanna hear something really crazy though...my son was playing Club Penguin last night on it (yes..through the lines) and the display suddenly went back to normal. First normal day it's had in weeks! It USED to do that all the time...would be normal...go to lines and then back to normal after a random amount of time. Can only pray now that it stays normal--at least for a while.

[MacBook] iTunes Question

Hello to the Group,

Question about iTunes on the iPad.

On my MacBook iTunes when you are in the Music section there is a Radio button. When you press this button you have hundreds of radio stations you can listen to via streaming.

On my iPad I don't find the same Radio button. I would like to listen to that same Radio station selection on the iPad.

Do I need another application to do that? Seems funny iTunes on the MacBook has this feature and the iTunes on the iPad does not.

Is The Syrian Rebellion Now In Its Deathwatch Phase?

The Deathwatch Phase -- Strategy Page

December 21, 2012: The Syrian rebellion is now in its deathwatch phase. The government is doomed and its forces grow weaker every day. It’s only a matter of time before the government losses control of the entire country and surviving officials flee for sanctuary. Allies (Iran, Russia, China) have been quietly offering refuge to Assad and his senior aides. President Basher Assad keeps making public announcements that he has no intention of leaving. The same can’t be said about the several thousand senior officials he depends on to control the country. Many of these people have committed known criminal acts over the decades and have to fear rebel retribution if they are still in Syria when the rebels win. Many of these officials have already sent their families into exile and when these army and government leaders join their families in large numbers, you’ll know it’s the end. That is expected to happen within the next few months or weeks.

My Comment: I concur with this analysis .... with the exception that I think that the fighting will last to the end of 2013 .... and if Assad and his military use chemical weapons .... even longer than that. But the dye has already been cast .... the Syrian military may have the weapons, but they are losing men .... and they have only so many men left in this war of attrition. As far as the rebels are concern .... if they lose 2 men (if not more) for every Syrian soldier killed .... they are winning .... and as time makes the rebel soldiers more formidable and experienced fighters .... that ratio will probably become 1:1.

How North Korea Indoctrinates It's Young Warriors

North Korea A Culture Of Warriors -- Tatiana Gabroussenko, Asia Times

" ... Young guerrilla girl Kumsuni delivers letters to comrades, and one day is caught by the police. When the policemen demand the girl disclose information about the guerillas, she spits into the faces of her interrogators. As the policemen drag Kumsuni to her execution, the heroic girl cries out 'Long Live General Kim Il Sung!'"

...Pre-teen boy Ri Kwang-ch'un is a member of a secret anti-Japanese children's organization. Along with others, he helps the "Red Guard uncles". However, one day policemen apprehend the boy. When the "bastards" torture the young patriot, Ri cuts off his own tongue in defiance. His last words are "Long Live the Korean Revolution!"

Even if one supports patriotic education of the younger generation, one is still likely to find such notions of slicing off one's own tongue, torture or execution to be much too disturbing and complicated to present to children. Yet the plots cited above are from comics published in Kkotpongori (Flower bud), a North Korean monthly magazine for kindergarden-aged children. The designated audience of the publication may be deduced by the types of logic puzzles included in each issue, such as: "Look at the pictures of a pig, a tractor and a bike. Which one moves faster?"

My Comment: Does this indoctrination work? Guess what .... it does. My father grew up in the Ukraine during the famine of 1932-1933. He recalled how everyone in school had to sing praises to Stalin for the food that they had .... and they all believed it .... even though everyone was hungry. What changed his point of view was when he was exposed through pictures and news reports on the West. The newsreels talked about hard times and unrest, but what he saw were well fed and well dressed people .... driving cars .... and living in nice homes. This became the seeds of his resentment of the communist system .... a deep resentment that persisted with him until the day that he died. This is what I predict will happen in North Korea. When the North Koreans are exposed to what life is really like outside the hermit kingdom .... trust me .... there will be resentment and hate directed at the Kim family and the Communist system. And guess what .... the North Korean communists know that, and this is their biggest fear.

China’s Other Territorial Dispute: Baekdu Mountain -- J. Berkshire Miller, The Diplomat

With disputes brewing in the East and South China Seas, there is another piece of contested territory in Asia that could pose some serious problems...

Last month, just one week after Barack Obama was reelected president in the U.S., the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) wrapped up its 18th Party Congress and elected a new seven member group to its elite Politburo Standing Committee (PBSC). The PBSC is the most important decision making body in China, and controls all essential elements of domestic and foreign policy. The new leadership in China faces a raft of challenges — both internal and external —which will help to determine its relationship with the U.S., Japan, Russia, India, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and others in the region.

Jon Hammar Sr. has confirmed that his 27-year-old son, a Marine combat veteran, is back on U.S. soil and with him in a rented car in Brownsville, Texas.

Hammar Sr. said his son was released from the notorious CEDES prison at 8 p.m. local time and made it back across the bridge between Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas by around 8:30 p.m.

The ex-Marine, who was arrested at the same border crossing Aug. 13 after attempting to declare an antique shotgun, was suffering from a stomach virus, his father told Fox News as he and his son drove from the border looking for a hotel to spend the night.

"We're both tired and at our wits end," Hammar Sr. said. "We're glad he's out of there."

His son declined interviews.

Military Suicides: A Look At The Data

Why Soldiers Keep Losing to Suicide -- Frontline

Most soldiers who take their own lives today have no history of deployment. They’ve never seen combat, never been to war.

Nobody really knows why.

And although the military’s suicide problem flared during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, so far it doesn’t seem to be ending with them.

About 53 percent of those who died by suicide in the military in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available, had no history of deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, according (pdf) to the Defense Department. And nearly 85 percent of military members who took their lives had no direct combat history, meaning they may have been deployed but not seen action.

My Comment: This is a surprise .... the majority of suicides occur to soldiers who have never seen combat. US Secretary of Defense Panetta is right .... we’re dealing with broader societal issues. The full report is here.

TAMPA — The nation’s most elite fighting forces — celebrated this year in film and best-selling books — are under more emotional strain after a decade of war than commanders realized, according to the senior non-commissioned officer for special operations.

A tragic part of that is record suicides this year, said Command Sgt. Maj. Chris Faris.

According to Pentagon data, there were 17 confirmed or suspected suicides this year among commandos or support personnel through Dec. 2, compared with nine suicides each of the past two years.

CIA Complains About Depictions In ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

CIA Complains About Depictions In Osama Bin Laden Movie ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ -- Washington Post

The CIA on Friday said that a Hollywood movie portraying the hunt for Osama bin Laden “departs from reality” in significant ways, and emphasized that despite assistance it provided to the filmmakers, the agency had no control over the final product.

In an unusual letter to CIA employees, acting Director Michael Morell said that the highly anticipated film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” leads viewers to believe that a “few individuals” were behind the hunt for the al-Qaeda leader, instead of the “hundreds of officers” who were involved over the course of a decade. He also rejected the film’s depiction of the CIA’s interrogation program — and the implication that it helped extract valuable information from detainees.

But I guess this is what Washington is today ....if Hollywood portrays your point of view positively .... everything is OK. If a movie contradicts your message .... expect complaints and negative publicity. As to what is my take .... I would think that the acting CIA Director has more important things to do.

U.S. Report: China Aided Iran’s Missile, Nuclear Programs

China aided Iran’s missile, nuclear programs, report states.

China’s government provided goods and expertise for Iran’s nuclear program in the past and also gave Tehran’s Islamist regime missiles and other arms as part of the nations’ anti-United States policies, according to a congressional commission report made public Thursday.
