I have had similar problems with my 17 Powerbook (2005). It would just shut down without much warning after being on long enough, especially if I was running high stress things like video.

After running diagnostics, the Genius Bar told me it was heat related and required a motherboard repl (surprise, the solution of choice), but I never had it repaired (at the store's proffered bargain rate of around $300 then, about 2009), since we bought MBPs in 2010.

Yours is a MBP so I don't know about any correlation.

Seems like your problem is similar, though.

It also reminds me of a heat related problem I had with a small Sony TV, where some solder joints at a right angle between circuit boards were at fault. If I left the TV on long enough, as with the powerbook, it would go into spasms of turning itself on/off, etc.

Heat, major enemy of electronics, and getting worse as things get smaller. In the case of the TV, the solder joints were still visible and repairable, but these days, fergit it.

[MacBook] Noisy Pre Unibody 17" MBP

I gave my daughter my old MBP.

She is telling me that it randomly makes a sound like a dysfunctional fan. I don't recall that it had one and am suspecting the DVD drive.

Any thoughts out there??

It is also having slow shutdowns and sometimes difficult startups. The computer has shut down randomly both on Battery and AC power.

I am going to recommend that she run disk utilities etc, but am wondering if others have thoughts on this.

Thanks

It has an administrator password set up that won't let me get around it but, I don't mind deleting the entire HD and starting over since I do have a G4 startup disk. Soooooooo how do I (or can I) delete the HD and reinstall the startup disk and start over? Everything about it seems fine and I can ----
<edited 10.5 to 10.4>
If you have the startup disks, use the main install disk and start up holding down the C key after the chime. When startup finishes, check out the menus, follow the instructions to format the drive (do partitions if you wish), then re-install the system. Study the steps because I may not be recalling all that is there. With a G4, I would not go beyond 10.4, but other opinions may vary. My G4 (733 & about 1.5 GB memory) is slow with Tiger. You could try just a clean install which will not wipe out the drive, but without more information I don't know what you need.
