Re: [MacBook] Bunch of N00B questions

iTunes has its own sharing scheme, which also ties into Apple's DRM policies. But those libraries are generally only accessible over the LAN.

But look into Share Tool; it's an SSH tool that allows you to share iTunes (and iPhoto and files and screens) securely over the internest as if you were on your LAN. Very handy if you don't want to roll your own file server setup. But of course you still couldn't access the music if you have no wifi, so even if you copied the playlists to your laptop they'd have no way to reference the music.

I'm not a fan of Time Capsules (I prefer to keep my router and NAS separate). But you don't really need one if you've got other macs you're willing to keep running. You can use a disk in another networked computer to backup files as long as you can access it on the network. NAS storage is usually always on and available so it's nifty for automated and frequent backups, but you can use other attached drives, even over USB or Firewire. With Share Tool it's really easy for me to connect over the internet, BTW, with both the Mac at home and any drives attached to it. Which might be nice for both backup and accessing stored files.

And although, as noted, you can't convert that desktop to a Mac, there are alternatives. You could see if you could virtualize Mac OS on it. Or maybe Linux instead, and use it just as a file server. And then move your copy of Windows to the laptop or any other machine where it's needed.

[MacBook] Bunch of N00B questions

Ok. So, I might be new to the MBP, but not new to the whole networking idea, except it's under Windoze. That being said I have a few questions regarding networking and file sharing in a home network environment with the Mac OS X.

(1) I would like to centralize mu iTunes library so my wife and I can share the same set of files, but I'm wondering if iTunes will then look for the MP3s on that file share all the time, even when the MBP is not connected to the home network. If it would look for the file share, is there a way to setup iTunes (or another software package) to cache the playlists locally on the MBP.

(2) Can another computer running Mac OS X (either Leopard or Snow Leopard) be setup as a TimeCapsule, much in the same way you can purchase either the 1 or 2TB TimeCapsule. I don't need to purchase the TimeCapsule as I have more WiFi access points than I really need.

(3) I have a "homegrown" desktop that is currently running Windoze, how hard would it be for me to put a copy of OS X on it with the hardware that is currently installed in it? Micro$oft has a hardware compatibility list for their OS, does something like that exist in the Apple realm and how hard is it to get drivers for the hardware that is out there currently.

I ultimately would like to convert that desktop to OS X and use it as a file server to store pictures, music, video and eBooks as well as use TimeMachine to backup our MBPs.

Thanks for all the help!!

Macbook List Policy

This message is sent to all new members, and automatically sent to current members as a monthly reminder.

*********************************************************

Hello,

Welcome to the macbook group at Yahoo Groups. Please take a moment to review this message. Better yet, please keep this message in a safe place, so you'll always be able to reference it.

To learn more about the macbook group, please visit
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macbook

To start sending messages to members of this group,
simply send email to
macbook@yahoogroups.com

Basic guidelines:

1. This is a group of fellow users. This is not Apple. We do our best to share experiences and help others. Ask, participate, share, comment, gossip, enjoy, but leave the soapbox and sensationalism at home.

2. No spam. No advertising unless approved by the moderator. No discussion of cracks or pirating which could endanger the list.

3. No personal attacks. Offenders will be banned without warning.

4. Trim your quotes! This includes leftover Yahoo footers and signatures. Members who continually quote 60 lines, and only enter 2 of their own, may find themselves permanently moderated (or unable to post at all).

5. Please limit your signatures to 5 lines maximum, and do not post from any location which inserts legal disclaimer footers. If you cannot control this feature (by an employer, for example), please use the web site to post. Remember, this is a fully public group. Personal info in signatures, like email address and phone number, are probably best kept private. When in doubt, post without.

6. The official language of this list is English. We only make this declaration to keep things simple and prevent abuse.

In order to foil spam bots, all new members are automatically moderated. This may cause your first post to be delayed in reaching the list, but rest assured that it is worth the effort. Yahoo doesn't offer any other way to control spam, and their filtering is a joke, so this is all we have.

[MacBook] Downloading IOS update files then finding them

2011 11 20

The files for updating our iOS devices (2 iPad 2s, 2 iPhones, one iPad 1) are big and our DSL is no champ on speed (oh thank you VZ & Comcast for shorting the rural areas of the USA). For the latest one (5.0.1) we availed ourselves of the download first then install later option. Sounds easy, and doesn't thereby tie up your iOS device and your MBP. Good so far.

Then I decided to install the update for our iPad 1, to make sure all was well. Hooked it up for synch, and lo and behold, no option appeared to avoid ANOTHER download before doing the install of the update. What????

I hit the web and found instructions for a iOS "manual update", seemed easy. But when I browsed to find the file the instructions named, one apparently named or suffixed "IPSW", no could find.

I did a spotlight search separately, no luck.

Can anyone help me on this? The manual update instruction set says it takes about 10 minutes. Re-downloading will take a collective many hours!!

Thanks as always,

Jim Hardwick

It's not a huge, deal but unless I am crazy something changed in the last few days since I used to be able to set any res I wanted, even if not in a preset. 125 is a happy medium for file size vs readability that I had worked out for what I usually scan.

<snippppppp>

The presets shown are definitely such multiples.

Hmm, I'll have to check out the interpolation idea. But without being able now to make and compare a 125 of the same subject, not sure what I can do. The scanner is not new. This change just showed up yesterday. I do now recall an HP sw update, and various Mac updates, recently.

Thanks for the ideas, like I said it's not the end of my world, just annoying.

It could be Apple simplifying overall HP drivers based on HP's own specs. If your scanner has a native resolution based on multiples of 300, which most seem to, then 100 and 150 may have slightly better results anyway (simpler interpolation math).

If HP is relying on Apple's generic drivers to handle a relatively new device, that's a little lame, but there's not much choice. I finally had to move from Epson Scan over to Image Capture with my 12-year-old scanner since Epson doesn't want to deal it anymore.

You might check if VueScan supports the HP 8600, if it's worth another $40 to have that exact resolution--and if VueScan can even offer that.
