Jimmy King David Bowie The Thin White Duke has returned. After a 10-year span in which communication between David Bowie and his devoted listeners had become about as infrequent as the transmissions between ground control and Major Tom, that protean rock star said on Tuesday — his 66th birthday — that he had released a new single, "Where Are We Now?" in advance of a new album, "The Next Day," coming in March.
"Where Are We Now?" a song written by Mr. Bowie and recorded in New York, was produced by his frequent collaborator Tony Visconti, who has worked with him on albums like "Space Oddity," "The Man Who Sold the World," "Young Americans" and "Lodger." Mr. Visconti was also a producer and performer on Mr. Bowie's last studio album, "Reality," which was released in 2003 — antediluvian times on the David Bowie scale.
In a recording career that spans half a century, Mr. Bowie has dabbled in sounds as varied as Tin Pan Alley pop, glam rock, soul, disco and electronica (among other things). A news release from his press representatives gave no immediate indication of what direction he might take on "The Next Day," but said that Mr. Bowie "is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants … when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell."
"Today," it continued, "he definitely has something to say."
