My external hard-drive (Lacie, 1TB), which stores most video files, is not showing on my desk-top. It is connected to Macbook Pro through fire-wire 800 and I can feel reverberations/life in the hard-drive when connected to Macbook Pro, but the icon does not appear on desktop. I have also checked it in About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Firewire, and it does not show the Lacie hard drive.

I also took the MacBook Pro to Apple Store to get the firewire 800 checked and it worked ok with their harddrive. My firewire cords were also tested and they are ok.

Welcome to the group, Mac!

Troubleshooting external devices almost always starts with the cable, since it's the easiest to check/replace. Then, the biggest worry is the FireWire port on the Mac, since that is not separable from the logic board and would mean a major repair. Luckily, that checks out, too. So...

Has the drive ever shown up on the Mac since you purchased it? If not, do you know how it's formatted? If NTFS, it may simply not show in OS X. Have you run Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities/) to see if it shows up there? If so, and you only plan to use it on the Mac, re-format (Erase) the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and that may solve things.

Last resort: I know it sounds like a drag, but you may have to bring the MacBook Pro *and* the drive back to the Apple Store. In-person, they could probably diagnose this in a few minutes.

Either way, let us know and good luck!
