I have had similar problems with my 17 Powerbook (2005). It would just shut down without much warning after being on long enough, especially if I was running high stress things like video.

After running diagnostics, the Genius Bar told me it was heat related and required a motherboard repl (surprise, the solution of choice), but I never had it repaired (at the store's proffered bargain rate of around $300 then, about 2009), since we bought MBPs in 2010.

Yours is a MBP so I don't know about any correlation.

Seems like your problem is similar, though.

It also reminds me of a heat related problem I had with a small Sony TV, where some solder joints at a right angle between circuit boards were at fault. If I left the TV on long enough, as with the powerbook, it would go into spasms of turning itself on/off, etc.

Heat, major enemy of electronics, and getting worse as things get smaller. In the case of the TV, the solder joints were still visible and repairable, but these days, fergit it.
