Assad's End Game. Then What? -- The Australian

AFTER more than 45,000 deaths, the civil war to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's Baathist regime dominated by the heterodox Shia Alawite community is nearing the end game. The rebels, endorsed by Sunni leaders in the Gulf and elsewhere, appear to have the upper hand in this 18-month-long civil war. Peace cannot come too soon, but the portents for the aftermath are disturbing. Sadly, Assad's downfall will not be the end of Syria's problems nor will it restore stability to the region.
