David Cameron has declared the mission in Afghanistan a ‘success’ as British troops prepare to pull-out.

Despite 438 British troops losing their lives during the 11-year conflict, the Prime Minister insisted Afghanistan was a ‘far better place’ than when the US-led invasion was launched in 2011.

Speaking during a pre-Christmas visit to British forces, he defended plans announced this week to almost halve the UK force to 5,200 by the end of 2013. All combat operations are to end by 2014.
