Aside from my more-reliable Gmail and private server email accounts, I have some older ones on Yahoo, Live (MS) and AOL. They randomly error out, telling Mail that my password is wrong when it worked 5 minutes prior, and that causes Mail to turn around and ask for your password again. You can hit 'Cancel' to leave your password as-is.

If you are using IMAP with these services, you could try reverting to good old POP3/SMTP. That's slightly less error-prone, since it's simpler.

But it's not Apple Mail at fault. Any remote email app will have the same problem if the server doesn't act right.

[MacBook] Email app options?

With my pc I used Firefox and had a tab for yahoo mail and a tab for gmail and now and then a tab to check the other two. With my new MBP I clicked on the stamp with the eagle and put my 4 emails into it. On one of the two yahoo emails it repeatedly asks for my password even though I click save to the keychain. Also, it repeatedly puts a tilde next to it and makes it offline or something.

Is there a good email freeware or shareware?

Is it better to just use Safari and go online like I used to?

Thanks for any and all advice.

I used "Eudora Mailbox Cleaner" to do the conversion when it was clear that Eudora was abandoned (years ago). That's another PowerPC app, however. D'oh! But I believe Apple Mail may have some of its own conversion routines built-in now. Some of the Eudora folks were working on a skin to make Mozilla Thunderbird more like Eudora, but these are the same people that abandoned Eudora in the first place, after milking "subscription" payments out of loyal users (including me) with zero updates, so I decided not to trust that group anymore.

Thank you but I like to manage my mail in Verizon webmail so I can get rid of spam etc. before downloading it to my Mac. "Mail" seems to have all my mail right away, so I don't have that safety feature. Downloading to Eudora cleared out the Verizon webmail mailbox, but "Mail" doesn't, so the Verizon mailbox is a mess now. Since I can't send mail from "Mail" I need to use the Verizon site now, and I use it when I'm on the road. So basically I'll need to do all the work of culling and deleting twice.

> Regarding Apple Mail not sending email, that's not so easy to diagnose without seeing it. If you can receive email ok, but just cannot send, then you probably don't have the outgoing server setup properly. If you are using IMAP, that shouldn't happen. If you are using POP3 to get your mail, then your SMTP settings need to be checked (correct server, correct port, SSL on/off, authentication, etc.).

Thank you but I don't know how to check these. Tried "Mail Help" but it doesn't help.

When I try to send mail, "Mail" says "Cannot send message using the server outgoing.verizon.net." It says to choose another from the list of servers but that's the only one on the list. Can you suggest others to try?

> Many "if's" already. That may be worth a trip to an Apple store.

This whole mess started because I got an iPad to use on a trip I'm taking very soon now. I don't have time to find an Apple store. I wish Apple had told me "If you get 10.7, these applications won't work any more."

> Or if possible, set up the account(s) fresh, and let the Mail app assist as much as it can. The app has a lot of auto-setup for most large services, and since it's so common, your mail provider may even have specific setup instructions for Apple Mail.

Not sure what you mean by "set up the account fresh." I'm at https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277 and tried "Add Account" but "Mail" says my account already has this host name and user name.

> The good news: Firefox is completely up to date. I'd guess that you got stuck on an old PowerPC timeline that never auto-updated--for good reason. Just go and grab the latest Intel version at http://getfirefox.com/

That worked, at least. I run Software Update every week and thought it was keeping up on Firefox but apparently not.

The $29.99 OS X Lion upgrade can only be purchased via the new App Store application, not on apple.com. So you need to be running 10.6.8 in the first place (to launch the App Store app). Just to be sure: Access the App Store app from the Apple menu, third item down, "App Store..."

Status for App Store purchases is right inside the App Store application itself. Click on the "Purchases" icon at the top of the window. If the purchase went through, you should see OS X Lion listed there.

I just re-downloaded OS X Lion yesterday to make a backup on a USB drive, so it seems to be working fine. Of course, you need to be continually connected to the Internet for this to work, and if you didn't already have an account set up, it should have guided you through doing that (sounds like it did?). Do you have a usual Apple ID that you use for other things like iTunes already?

I just got an iPad. My MacBook Pro runs OS 10.6.8. Apparently I
need to upgrade to 10.7 for it to access the iCloud.

But I'm having a *TERRIBLE* time trying to get 10.7. Earlier today I
spent at least an hour at the App Store and Apple.com trying to
figure out how to get it. At the App Store I clicked on the $29.99
but nothing happened.

Just now I clicked on the $29.99 and got "Buy App" so I went through
with that (credit card etc.) and it seemed to be placing the order
but nothing happened -- no download etc.

Checked apple.com order status and it has the order for the ipad but
not for 10.7. Called Apple and their robot sent me to
http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/
but I can't find a way to get help from there either.

Please, can someone tell me what to do?

Re: [MacBook] New MBP

texasexpediter.....there is a lot of help available to Mac users.  This group,    the online manual...
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/MacBook_Pro_13inch_Mid2010.pdf

and of course calling 1-800-my-apple.
Also you can google a question and get an answer.
As to streets and maps, you can use google maps or yahoo maps for a map and driving directions and distance.
Enjoy your Mac.  I'm a recent convert myself.  Karen

I wound up getting the basic 13" MBP and really like it so far, at least as far as I've gotten with it. I've got to make the transition from my Windows computer and that's going to take some doing. There are a few things I want that I don't know if they're available.

Why does nobody make a Streets and Trips type package for the Mac? I want to be able to input two addresses and get directions between the two plus total distance. I really want ST but MS apparently is too stupid to realize they have another market in Macs. I'll probably go with Parallels at some point for that plus a few other things that are PC only.

Is there a really good and really concise how to Mac in quick simple steps?

I have had MBPs for years & iPads from early in the first generation. I still have my "original " first generation iPad w 3G & still using a MBP. Never had any problems with them playing nice. The wife also has the iPad ~ WiFi & a MBP no problem either

That's only the svelte new 15-inch Retina Display MBP. The RAM in there is soldered onto the motherboard, so you need to choose 8 or 16 GB up front. The SSD is still on a daughter card.

The 2012 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro have a similar design as last year's models. The discreet hard drive inside pretty much requires it.

The next generation MacBook Pro with the Retina display is not user upgradeable, but the standard MacBook Pros available in 13 and 15 inch configurations still are.

The lack of user upgradeable parts in the next gen model is unfortunate because it paints the way of the future. I would rather have the option to install my own upgrades and sacrifice a few millimeters in the thickness of a 15 inch notebook for which I do not have the expectations of being ultraportable anyway. If I needed ultraportable I would have gone for the 11 or 13 inch Airs. The 15 inch is a desktop replacement that I can take home or to the conference table and the infrequent trip. Weight and thickness do not matter that much sitting on the desk or countertop.

Thanks for the input. I should have added that my storage needs are easily covered by the smallest drive options of both computers. I currently have 75gb used on my HP laptop and I suspect a fair amount of that is stuff I just keep moving from one computer to the next.

[MacBook] Re: Air or Pro?

I'd lean toward the Pro. Granted it is 1.5 pounds heavier, you have a faster processor and the ability to upgrade the RAM yourself. Instead of buying the 8GB upgrade from Apple, you can buy 8 GB from Amazon for $40. Installation is simple.

The same goes for the hard drive. You can swap out the slow 5400 RPM 500 GB HD for either a 240 GB SSD from OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/) for between $250-$350 or if you want more local storage, get the Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB Hybrid HD/SSD for $150. It's not as fast as a SSD but is faster than other hard drives for the money when loading frequently used applications.
