Take it to a Genius Bar if you can or to any good computer repair place (this is a laptop not totally unlike others), and have them check the connections between the body and the top/screen via the hinge. Most problems like you describe are physical electrical connection related in that area.

The intermittent thing cries out for that cause. I'd even gently wiggle the screen & hinge a bit to see what happens. I don't think your HD is at fault, but the OP's advice about checking it out using an external screen, and of course, backing up before you do very much else, is 100% good.

I'd even install a temperature monitoring program (various freeware out there), and try to see at what temp it happens.

There probably are some self help sites on the net--google away and see what you find. This may even be a known issue with Apple--check the knowledge base at Apple.com. Some Mac cases are damn near impossible to work on without the hands & tools of a very tiny person, so you may be out of luck for Doing It Yourself, but don't give up w/o trying.

Good luck,

JH
