There are no major Mac viruses at the moment and OS X does a pretty good job of keeping itself clean, as long as you allow the periodic janitorial scripts to run. You can download a free utility like Onyx to run those manually and wipe cached data. OS X also does minimal defrag of data files on its own, but you could also run something like iDefrag overnight to dig into everything if you are dealing with an old system and many, many files.

In short, you don't really need to. The only time I'd wipe the drive and re-install the OS was if I was selling or buying the Mac and wanted it 100% clean, or if I'd installed something deep in the OS that had gone awry.
